Crosstown Construction Update

Overnight Lane Reduction to a Single Lane between Brentcliffe Road and Leslie Street (Updated)

Starting September 28, 2014, 11 p.m.

The Eglinton Crosstown is a 19-kilometre light rail transit (LRT) line that will run along Eglinton Avenue through the heart of Toronto, with an underground central section. The line will connect Mount Dennis in the west to Kennedy Road in the east, and the new service will be up to 60% faster than the bus service today.

What/Where: Crews will be working on utility construction and relocation between Brentcliffe Road and Leslie Street.

Why: Construction at the east Eglinton Crosstown launch site is now underway to prepare for the delivery of tunnel boring machines. The site will remain a construction zone for multiple years through various stages of the project. Walls of the launch shaft are required to be in place and the shaft excavated prior to the arrival of tunnel boring machines. Construction of the walls requires utilities to be moved safely out of the way before work begins. Overhead hydro wires need to be relocated in this location.

When: The work will start September 28, 2014 and continue for approximately two to three weeks.

  • Work will take place overnight from 11:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.
  • This work is expected to last two to three weeks.
  • Some work may be rescheduled or adjusted due to weather conditions and unforeseen circumstances.

Where:

North Side Utility Work:

A work zone will be set-up on the north lane of Eglinton – next to the east Eglinton Crosstown launch site.  It will extend from east of Brentcliffe Road to west of Leslie Street. The work zone will be separated from the right-of-way with traffic cones.

Traffic Details

In order to perform the work, only one lane of traffic at-a-time will be able to continue. As such, eastbound and westbound traffic will alternately use the one lane. Paid Duty Officers (PDOs) will be employed to control the flow of traffic. There may be delays associated with this work as you travel through the area.

North Lane Construction

As a result of utility work on Eglinton, from Brentcliffe Road to Leslie Street, the westbound lane on Eglinton will be occupied by construction activities.

To allow for westbound traffic to continue, eastbound Eglinton traffic will be temporarily stopped.  Westbound traffic will then be diverted to use the eastbound lane, around the work zone. PDOs will be employed to control and synchronize the flow of traffic.

Subsequently, to allow for eastbound traffic to continue, westbound Eglinton traffic will be temporarily stopped. Eastbound traffic will continue to proceed on the eastbound Eglinton lane.  Police will be employed to control and synchronize the flow of traffic, alternating eastbound and westbound.

Traffic patterns in the area will continue to change and shift during different phases of the work. Traffic delays are expected during construction. Please take care and watch the traffic signs when travelling near construction areas.

Work Hours

The hours of work as permitted are between 11:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m., 7 days a week. Underground tunnelling and associated work may continue 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Timelines may be adjusted due to weather and unforeseen circumstances.
